Historically, high schools have isolated their inhabitants. Teachers plan lessons and instruct classes behind closed doors, with very little collegial interaction. Students are asked to sit quietly at their desks, speaking to their teachers or peers only when directed. Administrators remain chained to their desks, so busy with bureaucracy that they rarely spend time in hallways and classrooms. Parents come to school only when problems arise. Effective schools defy such isolation, insisting that students, adults, family, and community work together to foster student achievement.
