Opened in fall 2002, Lionel Wilson Preparatory Academy was the first new public school to be built in Oakland, California in two decades. The school, named after Oakland’s first black mayor, occupies a new building on a three-acre site. Founded by Aspire Public Schools, a charter management organization which manages seventeen schools in California (five of these are in Oakland), Wilson Prep is a neighborhood school with 98% of its 470 students (grades 6-12) from East Oakland and Sobrante Park.
