Rightsizing design considerations

2. Entrance and egress.

Separate entrances and parking lots can suggest autonomy before visitors even enter the building. Much like connected townhouses have separate entries, every school might offer its own entrance portico, each with a shape and décor unique to its distinct identity. When issues of density, climate, or security require small schools to maintain indoor entrances, a main entrance can be used to direct visitors to the family of entrances of autonomous small schools. Signage and other architectural features can point to lines of approach, and much like gateways mark the passage into a yard or neighborhood, reception areas in each small school can provide definition and announce arrival into a distinct and separate place.
